ACWA Power accelerates Azerbaijan’s renewable future with major wind project
Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power has invested over 1.073 billion SAR (approximately $286,1 million) into the construction of the 240-megawatt Khizi-Absheron wind power plant, the company’s Q1 2025 financial report says.
The project represents one of Azerbaijan’s largest renewable energy undertakings and forms part of the country’s broader strategy to diversify its energy mix and reduce carbon emissions, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
In a statement accompanying the quarterly report, ACWA Power CEO Marco Arcelli noted the company’s ongoing efforts to expand its renewable energy footprint. “These initiatives form the foundation for sustainable and projected future revenue and cash flow, and positively impact current financial results through development, procurement and construction management revenues,” Arcelli said.
Selim Güven, General Country Manager for Azerbaijan and Türkiye at ACWA Power, confirmed that phased electricity generation from the wind power plant is scheduled to begin in August 2025. Full commissioning of the facility is expected in the fourth quarter of this year.
To date, the installation of all 12 turbines at the Absheron (Gobustan) section of the plant has been completed, with operational launch anticipated in Q3 2025. Meanwhile, turbine installation continues at the Khizi site.
Upon completion, the wind farm is projected to generate up to 907 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity annually—enough to meet the energy needs of more than 300,000 Azerbaijani households. The wind power facility spans two primary locations: Absheron (Site 1) and Khizi (Site Khizi 3), specifically in the villages of Chayli and Sitalchay.
A total of 37 wind turbines will be installed—12 in Absheron and 25 in Khizi—solidifying the Khizi-Absheron project as a cornerstone in Azerbaijan’s renewable energy landscape.
