Minister: Azerbaijan extends gas reach with new Türkiye–Syria pipeline
A new cross-border gas pipeline linking Türkiye and Syria will expand the geographic reach of Azerbaijan’s natural gas exports, Azerbaijan’s Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov has said.
Speaking in the Turkish border city of Kilis at the inauguration of the Kilis–Aleppo pipeline, Jabbarov described the project as “another important stage” in Azerbaijan’s economic development, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
The ceremony was attended by international partners and officials from Azerbaijan, Türkiye and Syria.
The pipeline will deliver Azerbaijani gas to Syria via Türkiye, a move Jabbarov said highlighted Azerbaijan’s position as a reliable and strategic energy supplier.
“First of all, this is happening against the background of Azerbaijan already supplying natural gas to 14 countries. This fact has transformed our country into a significant gas supplier not only in the region but also at the global level, and one of the states contributing to energy security,” he said.
Jabbarov emphasised that the project was the result of the economic and geoeconomic policies pursued by President Ilham Aliyev, adding that the timing was particularly significant for Syria.
“Syria is currently experiencing one of the turning points in its history. The restoration of normal life in the country and the sustainable provision of energy supply directly affect the welfare of millions of people. Natural gas exported from Azerbaijan will primarily be used for electricity generation and energy supply for the population,” he said.
The minister also underlined the diplomatic dimension, calling the pipeline “the result of the balanced and flexible foreign policy implemented by President Ilham Aliyev”.
He credited international cooperation and Azerbaijan’s growing influence for making the project possible in a short timeframe, noting SOCAR’s role in determining gas volumes and coordinating deliveries despite “difficult logistical and commercial conditions”.
“But at the foundation of all this lies the trust our country has gained in the international arena,” Jabbarov added.
He said the pipeline would extend Azerbaijan’s gas export geography, reinforcing its role as a competitive supplier. “In the medium and long term, we hope that activities in this direction will expand further,” he concluded.
Moreover, Jabbarov has highlighted the strategic significance of a new cross-border pipeline between Türkiye and Syria, saying it will broaden the reach of Azerbaijan’s natural gas exports.
Speaking in the Turkish border city of Kilis during Saturday’s inauguration of the Kilis–Aleppo pipeline, Jabbarov called the project “another important stage” in Azerbaijan’s economic development.
The pipeline, launched in the presence of officials from Azerbaijan, Türkiye and Syria, will facilitate the supply of Azerbaijani gas to Syria via Türkiye. Jabbarov said the initiative underscores Azerbaijan’s role as a reliable energy supplier and reflects the success of trilateral cooperation in the energy sector, paving the way for new export routes.
