Azerbaijan set to start first gas deliveries to Syria via Türkiye Video

02 August 2025 11:37

On August 2, Azerbaijan is set to begin its first shipment of natural gas to Syria via Türkiye.

A ceremony marking the launch of exports will be held in the Turkish border city of Kilis, where preparations for the event have been completed, Caliber.Az reports.

The gas will be supplied to a power plant in Aleppo, with an output capacity of around 1,200 megawatts. This is expected to almost double Syria’s current electricity generation.

Officials say the supply could boost daily electricity availability in Syria from the current three to four hours to about ten hours.

To recall, Azerbaijan’s first shipment of natural gas to Syria, via Türkiye, marks a milestone in regional energy diplomacy and Syria’s post‑war reconstruction.

The initiative stems from an agreement signed during a visit by Syria’s interim president Ahmed al‑Sharaa to Baku on July 12, 2025, when President Ilham Aliyev and al‑Sharaa pledged deeper cooperation in the energy sector and rebuilding Syria’s power infrastructure.

Under the swap arrangement, Azerbaijan will supply gas to Aleppo through Turkish territory, as part of a broader effort by Ankara and Baku to boost Syria’s electricity.

Türkiye’s energy minister has said the initial delivery of 6 million m³ per day could generate around 1,200 MW of power, more than doubling Syria’s current output and extending daily electricity supply from just 3–4 hours to approximately 10 hours.

Qatar is co‑financing the project, and SOCAR is expected to partner in its implementation
