UN official hails Azerbaijan’s role in regional energy cooperation

Azerbaijan is demonstrating how regional energy cooperation can move from political ambitions to practical implementation, said Dmytro Shlapachenko, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan.

Shlapachenko made the remarks at a roundtable held on the sidelines of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), Caliber.Az reports.

“But if we talk specifically about energy, I am very inspired by the example of Azerbaijan, because, in my view, Azerbaijan demonstrates a concrete example of how regional cooperation can move from political ambitions to practical implementation,” Shlapachenko said.

He also highlighted Azerbaijan’s plans to lay an undersea electricity cable along the Black Sea seabed to connect Azerbaijan and Georgia with European electricity markets via Romania. 

“You have probably all heard that in 2024, the feasibility study was completed, and subsequently a joint venture was established with the participation of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary to advance this initiative. So, for me, this is a concrete example of how countries can think outside the box, how they can coordinate their efforts, and this benefits absolutely everyone. So regardless of geopolitical differences, this is something very concrete,” the UN Resident Coordinator stressed.
