Azerbaijani FM urges stronger climate action as Caspian Sea level falls

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has called for faster and more effective climate action, warning that the impacts of climate change are increasingly affecting national economies and highlighting the significant decline in the level of the Caspian Sea.

Bayramov made the remarks while addressing the UNFCCC 4th Climate Week High-Level Ceremony, where he stressed the need to turn international climate commitments into concrete results, Caliber.Az reports per the Foreign Ministry's statement on X.

He said climate pressures are emerging alongside geopolitical instability, conflicts and market volatility, making economic diversification and energy resilience increasingly important to national security and long-term stability.

Bayramov also highlighted the outcomes of COP29 in Baku, particularly agreements on climate finance, carbon markets and implementation of the Paris Agreement. He stressed the importance of fully delivering the Baku Finance Goal and increasing ambition beyond the target of $300 billion.

The minister also pointed to the Baku to Belém Roadmap, which aims to demonstrate how climate finance could be mobilised at a scale exceeding $1 trillion.

Azerbaijan's domestic climate policies were also highlighted, including the submission of its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), aligned with the outcomes of the Global Stocktake. Bayramov also cited the country's expansion of renewable energy through major solar and wind projects, hydropower and international partnerships.

The minister emphasised Azerbaijan's continued role in international climate diplomacy following its COP29 presidency. He noted Baku's hosting of the 13th World Urban Forum in May and UN World Environment Day in June, highlighting the country's involvement in discussions on climate-resilient cities, sustainable urban development and global environmental action.

Bayramov also pointed to cooperation with Türkiye, Brazil and Australia through the “Belém Mission 1.5” Troika as an example of efforts to strengthen international cooperation and bridge differences on climate policy.

He reaffirmed Azerbaijan's support for Türkiye as it prepares to host COP31, stressing the importance of continuity and regional solidarity between the COP29 and COP31 presidencies.
