UN praises Azerbaijan’s leadership in tackling climate change

The United Nations appreciates Azerbaijan’s leadership on climate change, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Dmytro Shlapachenko said.

Speaking at a roundtable titled “Regional Dialogue on the Role of Sustainable Energy Centres in Promoting Climate Resilience, Innovation and Energy Transitions,” held as part of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), he highlighted Azerbaijan’s role in bringing together a broad range of participants to address climate change, Caliber.Az reports.

“The government of Azerbaijan has played a fundamentally important role in bringing together such a large and diverse range of participants. And this is exactly how I see the further development of our cooperation. Of course, I would like to express special gratitude to the government of Azerbaijan, which is taking such a leading role in addressing climate change, and the UN is, of course, ready to support this,” Shlapachenko said.

He also described the involvement of the private sector in discussions during Baku Climate Action Week as an important signal, noting that all key stakeholders need to come together to implement large-scale projects.

“In this sense, our convening and unifying role is extremely important. (...) Of course, when it comes to the private sector, private financing itself will play a key role. And I repeat: I am very pleased that we at the UN are beginning to engage the public and private sectors much more effectively,” Shlapachenko added.
