Natural gas from Azerbaijan has reached Syria’s Homs province via the Türkiye–Syria pipeline.
The gas, transported through the Türkiye–Syria pipeline, was delivered to the Cender gas power plant in Homs province, located in the country’s central region, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.
At the next stage, the gas will be sent from the Cender station to the Nasıriyye and Teşrin thermal power plants, situated near the capital Damascus.
The valves at the gas power plants were opened in the presence of Syrian Deputy Minister of Energy Ghiath Diab and Homs Governor Abdul Rahman al-Ama.
In a statement to the media, Diab noted that natural gas from Azerbaijan had so far been delivered via Türkiye to the Cender gas station.
The pipeline has a daily capacity of 3.4 million cubic metres, of which 1.4 million cubic metres are currently being transported. This volume enables the production of 250 megawatts of electricity.
The deputy minister stressed that this flow, coming through Türkiye, is a strategic step towards connecting the Arab Gas Pipeline to the Republic of Türkiye, allowing Syria to be integrated with regional countries through the power grid, which will help strengthen stability in the country.
Diab added that with the delivery of gas to all thermal power plants, the current electricity supply in the country will increase to five hours per day. Under the next stage of a new agreement providing for the supply of six million cubic metres of gas per day, the aim is to increase electricity availability in households to eight hours a day.
The first supply of natural gas from Türkiye to Syria began on August 2, when Azerbaijani gas was delivered through Türkiye and into Syria via a pipeline from Kilis.
