At the inauguration of the Kilis–Aleppo border pipeline, Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir stated that Azerbaijan has supported Syria’s development and reconstruction through its gas export project.
“I thank Azerbaijan and Türkiye for their support in improving the well-being and reconstruction of Syria, a country suffering from years of war,” Caliber.Az reports per local media.
Meanwhile, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar described the inauguration of the Kilis–Aleppo pipeline as a historic event for Kilis.
According to him, the Türkiye–Syria gas pipeline is a key symbol of Turkish–Syrian friendship in the energy sector.
“I thank Syria, Azerbaijan and Qatar, with whom we worked together on this international project. I hope this pipeline will bring prosperity to our countries and peoples, as well as peace to our region,” the minister stated.
Bayraktar also announced the signing of a gas swap agreement with SOCAR, providing for the delivery of Azerbaijani gas to the Türkiye–Syria border. He added that Azerbaijani natural gas would be exported to Syria through Kilis, with six million cubic metres of gas to be transported daily via the Yavuzlu Measurement station.
The Turkish energy minister said that as a result of gas supplies to Syria, the country’s power plants would soon be operational again. “This natural gas will activate an installed capacity of around 1,200 megawatts.
This project will make a significant contribution to normalising life in Syria, improving living standards, and accelerating the process of return to the country,” he said.
Türkiye is currently exporting electricity to Syria from eight different points, Bayraktar added. At the initial stage, Türkiye plans to increase electricity exports to Syria by 25%, and later, more than double them through additional lines.
“Once the work is completed, the interconnection capacity will reach 860 megawatts, enabling the supply of electricity to about 1.6 million homes in Syria,” he noted.
