Azerbaijan to power up with nearly 2 GW of green energy by 2027
Azerbaijan is poised to significantly expand its renewable energy capacity, with nearly 2 gigawatts (GW) of green energy expected to be integrated into the national power grid by the end of 2027.
This target was outlined by Javid Abdullayev, Director of the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency (AREA) under the Ministry of Energy, during the inauguration of the Green and Digital Silk Road international acceleration program held in Baku, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Addressing attendees at the event, Abdullayev detailed a strategic, phased approach to harnessing Azerbaijan’s green energy potential.
“We have already completed all the necessary groundwork for the first stage. This includes identifying suitable land plots, resolving network infrastructure challenges, and securing key agreements—all grounded in rigorous scientific analysis. We are confident that by the close of 2027, approximately 2 GW of renewable energy will be transmitted to Azerbaijan’s power system,” he affirmed.
Highlighting the second stage, Abdullayev emphasized the critical importance of realizing the country’s vast renewable energy potential not only to meet domestic demand but also to position Azerbaijan as a net exporter of clean energy. “Green energy production will surpass our internal consumption needs, making export capabilities paramount. To achieve this, we must develop robust interconnector infrastructure and enhance our export potential,” he noted.
The director revealed that four interconnectors are currently under consideration, with all associated preparatory work actively underway. “Each interconnector project aligns with the goals of today’s acceleration program. We are collaborating closely with the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport on the deployment of optical components, where significant progress has already been made,” Abdullayev added.
