Azerbaijan involves 3,000 volunteers for COP29 conference

15 October 2024 17:35

The selection process for volunteers to participate in the UN Climate Change Conference COP29 in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku has reached its final phase, with 3,000 volunteers chosen to help ensure the event runs smoothly.

According to the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company, the role-playing training stage, essential for enhancing the knowledge and skills of future volunteers, has been completed, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

Specialists from the relevant structural divisions of the Company briefed volunteers on their specific tasks and responsibilities during the conference.

As a result of this training phase, 3,000 volunteers have been selected to work across 35 areas in 17 divisions of the Operating Company. Starting from October 14, the selected volunteers will be gradually engaged in hotel services, transportation, logistics, and other areas.

The final phase of the volunteer program will commence on November 3 at the Baku Olympic Stadium, where candidates will receive a hands-on introduction to the event's infrastructure and zones (Blue and Green).

This comprehensive training ensures that volunteers are well-prepared to support the successful execution of COP29, contributing to Azerbaijan's efforts in addressing climate change.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Azerbaijan on November 11-22. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. During two weeks, Baku will become a global hub, welcoming around 70,000 to 80,000 international guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aimed at preventing dangerous human interference with the climate system.  The abbreviation COP means "Conference of the Parties" and refers to the highest decision-making body responsible for overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC.
