Azerbaijan welcomes over 1.5 million Russian, Ukrainian citizens since start of conflict
From March 2022 to July 2024, over 1.5 million citizens from Russia and Ukraine arrived in Azerbaijan, reflecting a significant migration trend linked to the ongoing conflict between the two countries.
This information was detailed in a recent report by the State Statistics Committee, Caliber.Az reports.
The report outlines that between March and December 2022, Azerbaijan saw the entry of 397,005 Russian citizens and 24,609 Ukrainian citizens.
The numbers surged dramatically in 2023, with the arrival of 624,753 Russians, an increase of over 200,000 compared to the previous year. Additionally, 31,267 Ukrainians entered Azerbaijan last year.
The upward trend continued in the first half of 2024, with 438,066 Russian citizens and 20,189 Ukrainian citizens arriving in the country from January to July.
The migration surge coincides with the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022. The influx of people from these nations highlights Azerbaijan's role as a destination for those seeking refuge and opportunities amid the turmoil in their home countries.
