Azerbaijani president approves key agreements on climate change, COP29 participation

10 October 2024 20:59

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has officially approved an important agreement concerning the upcoming 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

This agreement, which also encompasses the 19th Conference of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol and the 6th session of the Conference of the Parties to the Paris Agreement, reflects Azerbaijan's commitment to global climate initiatives, Caliber.Az reports.

The agreement was signed by the Government of Azerbaijan and the Secretariat of the Paris Agreement, Kyoto Protocol, and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change on August 17, 2024, in Baku and subsequently on August 23, 2024, in Bonn.

In addition to the COP29 agreement, President Aliyev has also ratified a memorandum of understanding focused on the exchange of information regarding climate change. This memorandum, signed on September 4, 2024, in Baku and on September 9, 2024, in Bonn, aims to facilitate collaboration between the Azerbaijani government and the relevant international climate bodies.

Meanwhile, the Azerbaijani president signed an Order approving the "National Strategy on Efficient Use of Water Resources."

As per the decree, the coordination of the measures outlined in the National Strategy will be overseen by the Commission established under the presidential Order No. 1986, dated April 15, 2020, on "Measures to Ensure Efficient Use of Water Resources."

The Cabinet of Ministers is tasked with reporting annually to the President on the progress of the National Strategy's implementation and addressing other matters arising from the decree.

Monitoring and evaluation of the strategy's implementation will be conducted by the Center for Analysis of Economic Reforms and Communication, at the request of the Cabinet of Ministers.
