Azerbaijani, Kazakh presidents discuss strategic partnership, Middle Corridor in Bishkek PHOTO / UPDATED

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his Kazakh counterpart Kassym-Jomart Tokayev have discussed bilateral relations, transport connectivity and the development of the Middle Corridor during a meeting in Bishkek.

The meeting took place on August 31 on the sidelines of events in the Kyrgyz capital, Caliber.Az reports via state media.

President Aliyev congratulated Tokayev on the successful conduct of the first elections to Kazakhstan’s new parliament, the Kurultai. He said the elections represented another demonstration of the Kazakh people’s support for the large-scale reforms being implemented in the country under Tokayev’s leadership.

Tokayev, in turn, thanked the Azerbaijani president for his congratulatory letter and for the active participation of Azerbaijani observers in the elections.

The two leaders noted the successful development of strategic partnership and allied relations between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. They stressed the importance of high-level reciprocal visits and regular contacts in further strengthening bilateral ties.

Transport and logistics cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions. The presidents exchanged views on the prospects for further cooperation between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan in developing the Middle Corridor, the trans-Caspian trade route linking China and Central Asia with the South Caucasus and Europe.

The sides also discussed the upcoming summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), which is set to be held in Baku.

The meeting also covered future high-level contacts and other issues of mutual interest.
