Azerbaijani president signals readiness to ease regional tensions in call with Iran

31 January 2026 22:16

President Ilham Aliyev has stated that Azerbaijan is ready to help de-escalate regional tensions in a phone call with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian.

During the conversation on January 31, the two leaders reaffirmed that Azerbaijan–Iran relations are based on friendship, brotherhood, and good-neighborliness, underpinned by deep historical, ethnic, and religious ties between their peoples, Caliber.Az reports via state media.

They spoke positively about the Iranian President’s previous visits to Azerbaijan and the productive negotiations held during these meetings, noting that such high-level interactions have significantly strengthened bilateral relations. The leaders also highlighted that construction of the Aghband-Kelaleh highway bridge over the Araz River is proceeding on schedule.

President Aliyev expressed concern about the current regional situation and reiterated Azerbaijan’s readiness to contribute to de-escalation, emphasizing the importance of resolving issues through dialogue and mutual understanding.

President Pezeshkian, in turn, expressed his gratitude to President Aliyev. The two leaders also exchanged views on the friendly and brotherly ties between their countries and discussed potential future cooperation, agreeing to maintain ongoing contact.
