Baku-Berlin ties in focus as President Aliyev receives new German ambassador PHOTO

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received newly appointed German Ambassador Dirk Lölke on August 13, with the diplomat presenting his credentials as the sides discussed strengthening bilateral strategic partnership and expanding cooperation in key areas.

During the meeting, President Aliyev recalled with satisfaction his official visit to Germany last month, noting that he held productive discussions with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Friedrich Merz on bilateral relations and international issues. He stressed that Azerbaijan and Germany share similar views on regional stability, security and development, Caliber.Az reports via state media. 

The president said the talks identified new areas of potential cooperation, contributing to mutual understanding and the further development of the partnership. He also highlighted the significance of the Joint Declaration on the Strategic Agenda for Bilateral Partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Federal Republic of Germany signed in Berlin, saying it has taken bilateral relations to a qualitatively higher level.

President Aliyev noted that the two countries are already discussing strategic interaction across a number of areas, adding that existing opportunities in trade, investment and business are strengthening bilateral ties.

He also emphasised that Ambassador Lölke began his mission in Azerbaijan following his official visit to Germany, describing this as particularly important for the future development of bilateral relations. President Aliyev wished the ambassador success in his diplomatic activities.

Lölke expressed gratitude for the reception and conveyed his congratulations to President Aliyev on the first anniversary of the summit held between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington on August 8, 2025.

President Aliyev, in turn, reiterated that the peace agenda in the region was launched at Azerbaijan’s initiative and stressed that Baku would continue its efforts to advance the peace process, adding that peace in the region is already irreversible.

The German ambassador said the German government was highly satisfied with the results of President Aliyev’s visit and expressed hope that the agreements and initiatives discussed during the visit would be implemented soon.

The meeting also addressed relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union, with the sides highlighting the positive momentum observed in the development of these ties in recent times.

They further discussed the East-West transport corridor and the prospects for German companies to make use of the route’s opportunities in the future, as well as cooperation in conventional and renewable energy and education.
