Bayramov, Guterres discuss Azerbaijan’s humanitarian and donor role

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, with the two officials discussing regional and international developments and Azerbaijan’s contribution to the United Nations.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said on X that the sides exchanged views on a range of regional and international issues, including developments related to Azerbaijan.

The meeting highlighted Azerbaijan’s active engagement with the UN and its specialised agencies, as well as what the ministry described as the country’s contribution to multilateralism, international law and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

Bayramov and Guterres also discussed Azerbaijan’s role as a donor country and its humanitarian initiatives.

The talks covered the global climate agenda and sustainable development. The sides noted Azerbaijan’s successful hosting of COP29 and its growing role in renewable energy, transport and regional connectivity.

Bayramov also briefed Guterres on the latest progress in efforts to normalise relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, measures to strengthen confidence in the South Caucasus, large-scale reconstruction projects aimed at facilitating the return of former internally displaced persons, and ongoing demining efforts.
