Belgium conducts first humanitarian airdrop over Gaza
Belgium’s military has completed its first humanitarian airdrop over Gaza, the country’s Defence Ministry announced on August 3. The aid delivery, carried out via Jordan, is part of a wider international effort to deliver food and medical supplies to the besieged Palestinian enclave.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has previously warned that airdrops are at least 100 times more expensive than land deliveries by truck, calling them a last resort rather than a sustainable solution, Caliber.Az reports via Al Jazeera.
At the same time, the Belgian government is facing legal pressure at home over its stance on the war in Gaza.
On July 7, the state was formally summoned to appear before the French-speaking Court of First Instance in Brussels. The case, brought by a coalition of human rights groups, accuses Belgium of failing to act against Israeli violations of international law during the conflict.
Despite the legal and logistical challenges, Belgian officials say they remain committed to providing humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.
