Beyond coins: Exploring hidden waterworks of Italy's Trevi Fountain

23 March 2025 04:02

Italy's Trevi Fountain, one of the world’s most famous and photographed landmarks, attracts millions of tourists every year, all eager to admire its stunning baroque design and the iconic figure of Oceanus.

AP explores in a fresh article that each year, millions of tourists traverse Rome’s winding streets to admire the majestic Oceanus figure surrounded by cascading waterfalls that flow into a sparkling turquoise pool.

Yet, few are fortunate enough to see what powers the mesmerizing water display behind the scenes of this baroque masterpiece.

Wooden doors off a nearby street open into the chambers that control the fountain's water supply, sourced from the Aqua Virgo—a historic Roman aqueduct located 16 kilometers (10 miles) away. Within these chambers, two electric pumps work tirelessly to recycle 126 liters (33 gallons) of water per second, while the flow is meticulously monitored by ACEA, Rome’s water management company.

The precise flow is essential for maintaining the fountain’s flawless operation. Any deviation, no matter how small, could disrupt the water movement through the statues, according to Davide D’Alonzo, ACEA’s regional manager.

The modern control chamber is equipped with metal tanks and illuminated panels, reflecting the advancements in technology. In contrast, the original arched chamber continues to echo with the sound of rushing water through a thick pipe and is equipped with an 18th-century hydrometer that measures the fountain’s water level.

A basic spreadsheet affixed to the wall lists the names of wealthy Roman families who once benefited from the fountain's water. When these families fell behind on their payments, their water supply was abruptly cut off.

From the chamber's grated windows, those inside can look out over the fountain and its visitors, most of whom are unaware of the intricate systems hidden behind the waterworks. These visitors continue to toss coins into the pool over their shoulders, hoping to fulfill the legend that promises their return to the eternal city.
