BIG chief: Media key to raising awareness of colonialism's legacy

11 July 2026 09:55

The media have played a crucial role in raising global awareness about the consequences of colonialism and the importance of decolonisation, Abbas Abbasov, Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), said at the international conference "Media and Decolonisation: Rising Voices, Amplifying Narratives" in Baku.

"Over the past three years, the Baku Initiative Group has made significant progress in raising global awareness about the consequences of colonialism and the importance of the decolonisation process. Undoubtedly, the media have played an indispensable role in these efforts," Abbasov said, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

He also praised the work of journalists, saying their professionalism and commitment are essential to informing the public and increasing global awareness of key issues.

"Your profession requires dedication and integrity. It is a dynamic and demanding field that often involves working under high pressure and tight deadlines. We highly value your commitment and responsibility, which are crucial for raising public awareness and keeping societies informed," the BIG executive director noted.
