Burkina Faso seeks Russian support for security challenges

17 August 2024 13:44

Burkina Faso is actively seeking Russian assistance to address various security challenges, according to Defence and Veterans Affairs Minister Kassoum Coulibaly.

In an interview with Russian media, Coulibaly highlighted that while the support from Russia is valued, it is essential for Africans to take the lead in their own security, Caliber.Az reports.

“No one can ensure our security better than we can ourselves,” Coulibaly emphasized. He acknowledged that Burkina Faso might benefit from Russian help in certain areas, such as acquiring knowledge or equipment. However, he firmly stated that the country should not rely on foreign forces to fight its battles. “We appreciate Russia's support, but we must be the ones to take responsibility for our own security. We do not want others to take our place,” he said.

Coulibaly noted that Russia’s support aligns with this philosophy, indicating a mutual understanding between the two nations. “We are committed to addressing our own security challenges and realities. Our cooperation with Russia is based on this principle,” he concluded.

The Defence Minister was in Moscow to participate in the Army-2024 international military and technical forum, held from August 12-14. During his visit, Coulibaly met with his Russian counterpart, Minister Andrey Belousov, to discuss ongoing and future collaborations. The forum provided a platform for Burkina Faso to explore further avenues of support while reinforcing its commitment to managing its own security responsibilities.
