European Parliament opens office in Chisinau to back Moldova’s EU aspirations
The European Parliament has officially opened its representative office in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, as part of efforts to strengthen engagement with Moldovan society and support the country’s pro-European course championed by President Maia Sandu.
As reported by TASS, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced the opening during a joint press conference with Sandu in Chisinau.
“What could be better proof of Moldova’s European path than the opening of the European Parliament’s new office in Chisinau?” Metsola said, emphasising the Parliament’s commitment to “engage in dialogue” with Moldovan political parties and civil society organisations.
Metsola referred to Moldova’s recent parliamentary elections in September, which she described as reflecting the country’s “European choice,” despite reports of widespread violations of opposition groups’ rights.
The European Parliament President also addressed the Moldovan legislature earlier on November 7, noting that representatives of all political factions, including opposition parties, were present. She stated that the European Parliament intends to cooperate not only with individual parties or committees but with the entire Moldovan parliament to promote institutional dialogue and democratic governance.
When asked about the potential start of Moldova’s EU accession negotiations, Metsola declined to specify any timeline, stressing instead that the enlargement process “is based on the individual merits of each country.”
