Canadia prevents Iranian presidential elections from being held locally
Canadian authorities have not granted Iran permission to open a polling station in the country to hold presidential elections.
"In Canada, the government has not issued the relevant authorisation to hold elections, there will be no elections there. They will be held in the US. A total of 344 polling stations will be opened for Iranians abroad," Caliber.Az writes, citing Iranian media.
Iran's snap presidential election is scheduled for 28 June. Out of 80 people who applied for the presidential race, the Council of Guardians of the Constitution selected only 6 candidates. On May 19, a helicopter with President Ebrahim Raisi on board crashed in the province of East Azerbaijan in northern Iran. The foreign minister and a number of state officials of the Islamic republic were flying with him. All passengers and crew members of the aircraft were killed.
Ottawa suspended diplomatic relations with Tehran in 2012 because of the Islamic republic's cooperation with the Syrian government, as well as Iran's alleged failure to comply with UN inspections. Canadian authorities closed the embassy in Iran and expelled Iranian diplomats from Ottawa.
