Defence chief: Italy sees no grounds for US troop reduction
Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said he sees no justification for a potential reduction of the United States military presence in the country, responding to remarks by President Donald Trump.
In comments to the Ansa news agency, Crosetto stressed that Italy has demonstrated its willingness to cooperate closely with the United States, particularly on issues related to safeguarding maritime routes.
“I do not understand the reasons. As is obvious to everyone, we did not use the Strait of Hormuz. And we even expressed readiness for a mission to protect shipping, which was highly appreciated by the American military,” he said.
Trump had earlier indicated that Washington was considering reducing the number of US troops stationed in Italy and Spain, citing disagreements among allies over the war in Iran and broader regional security issues.
