Deputy FM: Armenia seeks closer ties with EU

04 September 2024 20:32

Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Vaan Kostanyan has said that Armenia is ready to strengthen its relationship with the EU, with the opportunity available for deeper cooperation.

Kostanyan made these remarks during a panel discussion at the Strategic Conference in Bled, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

"We must value the time we have, as opportunities can be fleeting. We cannot afford to wait; this is a strategic decision made by the Armenian government," Kostanyan said in response to questions about Yerevan's willingness to collaborate with the EU.

Kostanyan emphasised that Yerevan is aware of its needs and desires to align with environments that share its values and noted that both the Armenian people and government have European aspirations.

The deputy foreign minister clarified that Armenia's reforms are driven by a mandate from people, following the 2018 revolution and the 2021 parliamentary elections, rather than a desire to please European partners or antagonize others.

"Despite all the challenges, we are moving in the direction indicated by our people. We must work hard, but not everything depends solely on us," he added.

The deputy minister reminded of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's statement that Armenia is prepared to align closely with the EU to the extent that the EU permits.

"The Armenian society is waiting for a response while there is still an opportunity," Kostanyan added.
