Russian FM, ambassadors from Caspian states discuss ministerial meeting in Turkmenistan
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has met with ambassadors from Caspian states to discuss deepening cooperation within the Caspian "Five" format, which includes Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan.
The meeting featured an in-depth exchange of views on various aspects of cooperation in the Caspian region. This included preparation for the upcoming meeting of foreign ministers from Caspian states in Turkmenistan, Caliber.Az reports, citing the message posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website.
The meeting was dedicated to the International Caspian Sea Day.
On August 12, the Caspian region countries, namely, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan celebrate International Caspian Sea Day.
This date marks the anniversary of two significant events. On August 12, 2006, the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Caspian Sea Environment (Tehran Convention) came into force, establishing the foundation for environmental cooperation in the region and confirming the commitment of the five countries to work together in preserving the unique ecosystem of the Caspian Sea. Additionally, on August 12, 2018, the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea was signed, a landmark document that defined the international legal status of the Caspian and established the fundamental principles and procedures for cooperation among the Caspian states.
