Armenian PM to attend BRICS summit while pursuing EU aspirations

18 September 2024 14:39

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is set to participate in the BRICS summit scheduled to take place in Kazan from October 22 to 24.

This announcement was reported by Armenian media outlets, as per Caliber.Az.

Founded in 2006, BRICS is an intergovernmental organization comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, with recent expansions to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

The organization was initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China as BRIC in 2006, with South Africa joining in 2010, transforming it into BRICS.

The BRICS group seeks to unite key developing nations to challenge the political and economic dominance of wealthier countries in North America and Western Europe.

In addition to his participation in the BRICS summit, Pashinyan emphasized Armenia's intention to pursue European Union membership when feasible. Speaking at the 2nd Armenian Global Summit, he highlighted Armenia’s proactive stance on EU integration, stating, "When we see that there is a more or less real possibility of joining the EU, we will not miss the moment."

Pashinyan also addressed concerns about Armenia's current security system, describing it as ineffective. He noted that the country’s previous security architecture had been insufficient, explaining, “Our security architecture turned out to be ineffective. We believed that our allies, whether far or near, would ensure our security while we lived in a region with closed borders. However, we have learned that third countries act according to their own interests. Therefore, the number one guarantee of security is peace.”
