Türkiye celebrates 103 years since historic Dumlupınar victory PHOTO
Türkiye commemorates the 103rd anniversary of its decisive victory in the Battle of Dumlupınar on Saturday, August 30.
Recognised as one of the most important holidays in the Turkish Republic, Victory Day is celebrated with patriotic ceremonies and festive events across the nation, honouring the heroism and determination of the Turkish armed forces, Turkish media reports.
The historic victory traces back to the Great Offensive led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Beginning on August 26, 1922, the campaign culminated on August 30 with the complete defeat of the interventionist forces, cementing its place in world history as a remarkable example of military strategy and national courage.
On the morning of August 30, 1922, Mustafa Kemal arrived at the Zafertepe Çalköy area in Kütahya to personally oversee the troops. The ensuing Battle of Dumlupınar became a turning point in Turkish history, resulting in the encirclement and defeat of Greek forces. Scattered remnants of the Greek army were forced to retreat, signalling the end of foreign occupation in the region.
Following the victory, Mustafa Kemal issued a bold directive to his forces: “Your first goal is the Mediterranean Sea. Forward!” This command set in motion a series of liberations: Afyonkarahisar on August 27, Kütahya on August 30, Gediz on September 1, and Emet and Tavşanlı on September 3. The campaign reached its climax on September 9, when Turkish forces successfully liberated İzmir from Greek troops, fulfilling Atatürk’s strategic vision.
Victory Day remains a powerful symbol of Türkiye’s resilience, courage, and the enduring legacy of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, whose leadership reshaped the nation and inspired generations.
