Simonyan: Armenia open to buying gas from Azerbaijan

Armenia has no plans to replace its dependence on one gas supplier with dependence on another and is prepared to source natural gas from multiple countries, including Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Türkiye, Armenian Security Council Secretary Alen Simonyan said.

Simonyan was responding to reports about a possible increase in the price of Russian gas supplied to Armenia. He said Yerevan’s broader strategy was to diversify its economic and security partnerships and develop alternative sources of supply, Caliber.Az reports per Armenian media.

“Who said we’re going to replace our dependence on one country with dependence on another?” Simonyan said, emphasising that Armenia would seek to purchase gas from any supplier able to provide it.

He said this could include Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Türkiye, potentially allowing Armenia to maintain supplies from several sources simultaneously rather than relying on a single provider.

Asked whether the possible increase in Russian gas prices was currently under discussion, Simonyan said the issue was relevant primarily insofar as it had been raised in public statements and subsequent reactions.
