Türkiye expects Iran to join efforts against PKK

16 September 2026 18:03

Türkiye expects Iran to contribute to efforts to dismantle PKK, which also has an Iran-based wing, PJAK, in the region, Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi said following talks with his Iranian counterpart Eskandar Momeni.

The ministers discussed cooperation in combating terrorism, organized crime, drug trafficking and illegal migration, as well as measures to strengthen border security.

Çiftçi said Ankara also seeks to accelerate extradition and deportation procedures and enhance cooperation between Turkish and Iranian Interpol units.

Momeni expressed support for efforts to resolve the issue involving the PKK, saying Türkiye, Iran, Iraq and Syria should work together toward a lasting solution.

“Türkiye, Iraq, Iran and Syria should join hands for a lasting solution. PKK, PJAK and all other wings should cease to exist and should lay down their arms. In terms of terrorism, Türkiye’s security means Iran’s security and vice versa,” he said, calling for more cooperation between Tehran and Ankara.
