Russia demands clarification over US VP’s comments on Ukraine “concessions”
Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has suggested seeking clarification from the United States over comments made by Vice President J.D. Vance regarding alleged “concessions” to Russia on Ukraine.
“I think it is necessary to approach the American side for an explanation of what their senior officials are talking about," Caliber.Az quotes Zakharova as saying per Russian media.
"Our positions are clear — the president speaks on this regularly, the foreign minister provides detailed analysis, and we also comment on it constantly,” she stressed.
Zakharova speculated that Vance may have been referencing or expanding on a statement made by US President Donald Trump in April 2025 concerning concessions to Russia.
She added, “Perhaps it was simply a quotation of his superior or a reference to what was said. I am only speculating, but this is a possible logical chain — you should clarify directly with the American side what was meant.”
To recall, on August 24, Vance said that Russia has made "significant concessions" in talks to end its war with Ukraine, though he did not rule out further sanctions to pressure the Kremlin toward peace.
In an interview on NBC's Meet the Press, Vance said the Russians have been "flexible" on some of their demands.
"I think the Russians have made significant concessions to President Trump for the first time in 3 1/2 years of this conflict. They've actually been willing to be flexible on some of their core demands. They've talked about what would be necessary to end the war," he said.
"Of course, they haven't been completely there yet, or the war would be over. But we're engaging in this diplomatic process in good faith."
Vance added, "We sometimes feel like we've made great progress with the Russians, and sometimes, as the president has said, he's been very frustrated with the Russians."
