Speaker Simonyan reassures Tehran, says Armenia won’t join moves against Iran

16 January 2026 14:57

Armenia has never taken and does not intend to take any actions against friendly Iran, Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan stated.

He made the comments in response to statements by Iran’s ambassador to Yerevan, Caliber.Az report via foreign media.

Earlier, Iranian Ambassador Khalil Shirgholami expressed concerns that Armenia appears to be becoming a platform for forces hostile to Iran. He also criticised protests outside the Iranian embassy in Yerevan, which he said involved offensive remarks over several days, and voiced worries regarding the implementation of the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP) project.

Commenting on these concerns, Simonyan stressed that the TRIPP project can create additional opportunities for all countries in the region, including Iran.

He added that as Iran’s internal situation stabilises and tensions ease, Tehran will see that these fears are unfounded.

The speaker also noted that Iran has more than ten neighbouring countries and questioned why, in the event of hypothetical US actions, its 23-kilometre border with Armenia would be relevant.

Simonyan assured that Armenian authorities remain in constant contact with Iranian counterparts and are ready to provide all necessary clarifications to resolve any concerns.
