Türkiye reveals new details of Putin’s demands in Ukraine talks
Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has revealed what he described as significant shifts in Russia’s position on the war in Ukraine over recent months.
Fidan said that during the third round of talks in Istanbul, both sides presented concrete positions for the first time, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.
These proposals were later discussed during a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
“It was then that we saw the beginning of the end,” Fidan said.
According to the Turkish minister, Russia is no longer insisting on control over the entirety of the four occupied Ukrainian regions. Instead, Moscow now seeks to hold the frontline in Zaporizhzhia and secure 25–30% of the Donetsk region under Russian control.
Fidan added that Russia’s agreement to guarantee these conditions through a security mechanism is “impressive” and provides a foundation for a potential settlement, while also presenting “complex challenges for both sides, particularly Ukraine.”
He noted that the strategic loss of part of Donetsk complicates the defence of the remaining territory. However, he suggested that international security guarantees could help balance the situation and create space for further dialogue.
