EU high rep urges Israel to respect int’l humanitarian norms
High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has said that Israel has the right to self-defence, but it must comply with international humanitarian norms.
Borrell made the remarks at a press conference in Oman, where he is taking part in a meeting with representatives of the Gulf countries, TASS reports.
“Of course, Israel has the right to self-defence, but it must use it in compliance with international humanitarian standards,” the EU representative said.
“We also call for releasing all hostages and for provision with food, water and medicine, which is also in accordance with international humanitarian principles,” Borrell said.
He also called for a political solution to the conflict to "break the cycle of violence".
