Romania to provide 23rd military aid package to Ukraine, expanding defence cooperation
Romania will soon deliver its 23rd military aid package to Ukraine, Ukrainian Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal announced following high-level talks with his Romanian counterpart Angel Tilvar in Kyiv.
Shmyhal shared the update via Facebook, expressing appreciation for Romania’s continued and “unwavering support across critical sectors” of Ukraine’s defence effort, Caliber.Az reports.
“The country has already delivered 22 packages of military aid to Ukraine, and soon our soldiers will receive the 23rd,” Shmyhal stated, highlighting Romania’s consistent contribution since the outset of the war.
In addition to material support, Romania continues to play a strategic role in bolstering Ukraine’s defence capabilities—particularly through the training of Ukrainian F-16 fighter pilots and assistance in strengthening the country’s air defence infrastructure. Shmyhal noted that both parties agreed to intensify coordination between their respective air defence forces in response to evolving battlefield demands.
“We focused on developing industrial cooperation. The priority is the production of: interceptor drones, FPV drones, and long-range drones,” the minister added, underscoring a shared commitment to scaling up domestic defence manufacturing.
The meeting also explored the potential use of the European SAFE (Security Action for Europe) mechanism to launch joint technological ventures, facilitate knowledge transfer, and enable Ukrainian defense production on Romanian territory.
Further discussions touched upon Romania’s possible involvement in the PURL (Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List) initiative, which facilitates the supply of US-produced weaponry to Ukrainian forces.
