Rome prepares fresh support package as Ukraine war continues

Italy is preparing a new package of measures to support Ukraine as Rome reaffirms its commitment to the country’s security, reconstruction and defense, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said.

In a statement issued by Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in a post on X following a phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, Tajani said Rome would continue supporting Kyiv while backing the European Union’s sanctions policy against Moscow.

“Italy's efforts continue to ensure Ukraine's security, reconstruction and defence, including through a new Italian package of measures in addition to support for EU sanctions,” Tajani said.

He reaffirmed the Italian government’s full support for achieving a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine as quickly as possible.

Tajani also underscored the strategic importance of the Black Sea and the wider Mediterranean region for global food security and ensuring the uninterrupted export of Ukrainian grain.

“We will continue working to maintain maximum pressure on Moscow,” he said.

As a further gesture of solidarity with Ukraine, Tajani said he had decided to illuminate the building of Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

On Ukraine’s Independence Day, Tajani reiterated Rome’s support for Kyiv and said he had spoken by phone with Sybiha.

Meanwhile, Sybiha has also held talks with Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard, who arrived in Kyiv on August 24.
