China warns sanctions cannot solve Iran crisis, calls for dialogue

Sanctions and pressure cannot resolve problems, as they only raise tensions, worsen the situation and serve no one's interests, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said.

Lin made the remarks at a regular news briefing in response to a question about US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's threat to impose secondary sanctions on countries trading with Iran, according to Xinhua.

He said China urged all parties to remain rational and exercise restraint, avoid actions that could further fuel conflicts and undermine global economic development and financial stability, and return to the right track of dialogue and negotiations to achieve a political settlement at an early date.

“China will closely follow relevant developments and take necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” Lin added.
