Italy plans €75 fine for pedestrians using phones while crossing roads

24 August 2026 19:26

Italy is considering a €75 fine for pedestrians who use mobile phones or other devices while crossing roads.

The measure is included in a proposed reform of the country’s road traffic rules, according to Italian news outlet Fanpage.it.

The fine would apply to pedestrians on the carriageway, whether they are using a pedestrian crossing or crossing elsewhere.

Hands-free devices and headphones would remain permitted, provided they do not compromise safety and allow sufficient hearing in both ears.

Italy’s transport ministry is expected to prepare the final version of the bill by mid-October. The proposals could still be amended following consultations with experts and industry representatives.
