France bans mobile phones in upper secondary schools

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that he has signed a law banning pupils from using mobile phones in upper secondary schools.

“I have just signed a law banning mobile phones in upper secondary schools from the start of the school year,” Macron wrote on X.

He said the measure was intended to “restore calm to the learning process”.

A similar ban has been in place in lower secondary schools since September 2025. The restriction will now also apply to upper secondary schools.
