EU’s von der Leyen to demand urgent answers from Hungary over Russia ties
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen plans to demand urgent answers from Hungary over Russian ties.
She will raise the issue of anti-Ukraine actions with Russia at the EU leaders’ level, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.
The European Union has responded to new revelations about talks between the Hungarian and Russian foreign ministers, which confirm that Hungary’s vetoes against Ukraine in the EU were coordinated with Moscow and will demand urgent explanations from the Hungarian government.
Commission Chief Spokesperson Paula Pinho emphasised that the disclosures “highlight the alarming possibility of a member state’s government coordinating with Russia, thus actively working against the security and the interests of the EU and all its citizens.”
She noted that the situation is “therefore extremely concerning, and it is for the member state’s government in question to explain itself as a matter of urgency, and the President [Ursula von der Leyen] will also raise the issue at leaders level.”
Sources cited by European Pravda added that European institutions are deeply alarmed by the evidence of direct cooperation with a “state aggressor.”
Even if Viktor Orbán remains prime minister after the April 12 elections, the actions of the current government and its apparent “subordination” to Moscow will be discussed at the next EU leaders’ meeting.
The EU intends to make clear to Hungary that such activities are completely unacceptable.
