EU to address Georgia's political situation in upcoming meeting
European Union Ministers for European Affairs are set to discuss the situation in Georgia during their meeting on October 15.
The issue is expected to be raised at the initiative of Germany, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.
Earlier this month, reports emerged indicating that the EU had decided against conducting high-level meetings with members of the Georgian political leadership.
Pavel Gerchinsky, the EU Ambassador to Georgia, stated that under the current ruling party, Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia, the country would not be able to join any political union.
He also added that the annual report on EU enlargement will be published in the second half of October, but he could not specify whether this would happen before the October 26 elections or after. The diplomat stated it was unlikely that the European Commission would issue a recommendation to start accession talks with Georgia.
“We expect the publication of Georgia's enlargement report in the second half of October, which is likely to happen a few days before the elections or a few days after the elections,” Ambassador Gerchinsky said. He also noted that the likelihood that the European Commission will issue a positive recommendation to start accession talks with Georgia is “unlikely” and that a positive decision by the bloc to start accession talks with Georgia is “even more unlikely.”
In a related context, Sergei Naryshkin, head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, asserted that U.S. and EU authorities continue to interfere in the internal affairs of South Caucasus countries.
The SVR has also indicated that the West is actively undermining Russia's influence in nations of the global South.
