European Commission announces €30 million in extra humanitarian aid for Lebanon
On October 3, the European Commission unveiled a further €30 million in humanitarian aid aimed at assisting those in dire need in Lebanon as hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel intensify.
This announcement follows an earlier commitment of €10 million made on 29 September, bringing the total EU humanitarian assistance to the country to over €104 million this year, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated, "Today, we are stepping up our humanitarian aid to the people of Lebanon. Our new funding will ensure civilians receive much needed assistance during this very difficult time.
This latest emergency aid package will provide urgent food assistance, shelter, and healthcare, among other essential support.
The Commission is also facilitating the delivery of material assistance to Beirut through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
“I am extremely concerned by the constant escalation of tensions in the Middle East. We continue to call for a ceasefire across the border with Lebanon and in Gaza, as well as for the release of all hostages. All parties must do their utmost to protect the lives of innocent civilians," she added.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in unprecedented population displacement within Lebanon, with thousands of civilian casualties and injuries reported.
