Huawei aims for HarmonyOS to rival Android, iOS by year-end

Huawei’s Executive Director and Terminal BG Chairman Yu Chengdong said the company expects its HarmonyOS ecosystem to be on par with Android and iOS by the end of 2025.

HarmonyOS, developed to run across multiple devices from a single codebase, has faced initial migration challenges, but once implemented, it promises high efficiency, Caliber.Az writes via foreign media. 

Yu highlighted that developing HarmonyOS required a massive investment—over six years, Huawei dedicated more than 10,000 personnel annually, creating 130 million lines of code at a cost of tens of billions of yuan. While most of the code was developed in-house, some contributions came from open-source partners.

The system has already reached 10 million users in a short period and is expanding into industries including mining, healthcare, and aerospace. Huawei has also invested nearly 10 billion yuan ($1.39 billion) to support developer migration to HarmonyOS and encourage ecosystem growth.

Yu emphasised that the platform is designed to unify smart terminals and devices under one operating system, with plans for broader adoption beyond Huawei hardware. He projected that HarmonyOS could eventually capture one-third of the global market share.
