Syria, Israel to sign security agreement in September with Trump present
Syria and Israel are set to sign a security agreement on September 25, in the presence of US President Donald Trump, according to high-ranking sources in Damascus cited by The Independent.
The signing ceremony will be preceded by a speech from Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the UN General Assembly. However, the sources emphasised that the two countries do not plan to conclude a comprehensive peace treaty in the near future, focusing solely on security matters.
Earlier in August, Israeli Minister of Strategic Planning Ron Dermer held two meetings in Paris with Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shaibani. US Special Representative Tom Barrack also attended these discussions.
The talks centred on de-escalation, non-interference in Syria’s internal affairs, and the resumption of the 1974 disengagement agreement between Israel and Syria, which established a UN-monitored buffer zone in the Golan Heights.
