Spider-Man: Brand New Day overtakes Titanic at global box office

Marvel’s latest Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has overtaken James Cameron’s Titanic to become the fourth-highest-grossing movie in history, continuing its remarkable run at the global box office.

The film has grossed approximately $2.332 billion worldwide since its release on July 31, surpassing Titanic, which has earned around $2.264 billion across its original theatrical run and subsequent re-releases.

Brand New Day has also overtaken China’s animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2 and now sits just behind Avatar: The Way of Water, which has grossed approximately $2.334 billion worldwide. The Spider-Man film therefore needs only a few million dollars more to enter the global top three.

At the top of the all-time rankings are Avatar (2009), with $2.923 billion, and Avengers: Endgame (2019), with $2.797 billion. Avatar: The Way of Water currently ranks third.

The latest Spider-Man instalment has also become the second-fastest film ever to surpass $2 billion, achieving the milestone after Avengers: Endgame, which reached it in a record 11 days.

The film’s success comes at a crucial moment for Marvel and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Avengers: Endgame itself scheduled for a theatrical re-release on September 25 ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, due out on December 18.

Starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Brand New Day has received praise for its action sequences and Holland’s performance, although critics have noted that the film falls short of being the definitive MCU comeback many had hoped for.

With only a narrow gap separating it from Avatar: The Way of Water, Spider-Man: Brand New Day could soon become the third-highest-grossing film of all time, further cementing Spider-Man’s extraordinary commercial appeal.
