Romania faces NATO’s highest number of drone incursions, minister says

Romania has recorded the highest number of drone incursions among countries on NATO’s eastern flank, interim Foreign Minister Oana Toiu said, citing the spillover effects of the war in Ukraine.

Speaking at the Annual Meeting of Romanian Diplomacy, Țoiu said the growing number of drone-related incidents was directly linked to the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

She stressed the need for continued vigilance as security risks associated with the conflict increasingly affect countries bordering Ukraine.

Țoiu also highlighted measures taken by Bucharest to strengthen enforcement of international sanctions against Russia. She said Romania had tightened penalties over the past year for those involved in schemes aimed at circumventing sanctions.

The interim foreign minister reaffirmed Romania’s unwavering support for Ukraine and said Bucharest would continue backing Kyiv amid the ongoing war.

At the same time, Țoiu said Romania plans to further strengthen its strategic partnership with the United States.

“Romania has chosen to be a strong anchor, both in its relationship with the United States and through this strengthened strategic partnership, to be one of the strong anchors between the European Union and the United States,” she said.

She stressed that Romania has experienced the highest number of drone incursions along the entire Eastern Flank.
