Sweden could lose almost 40% of its population by 2100

01 September 2026 03:24

Sweden’s population could fall by 4 million by 2100 if low migration, declining birth rates and an ageing population continue, according to one scenario in a government-commissioned report.

The scenario was presented by a group of experts led by Åsa Hansson, an associate professor of economics at Lund University, Sveriges Radio reports.

“If we consider the impact of a shrinking population in isolation, it would have very serious consequences for the Swedish economy,” Hansson said.

She added that Sweden should focus more resources on making life easier for young people.

Sven-Ulf Delfeldt, a senior economist at the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise, said Sweden needed more labour migration.

“There are many occupations today where there are shortages and where labour migration is needed to address essential workforce needs,” he said.

Sweden currently has a population of about 10.6 million.
