Dutch gas bills rise by €730 amid supply concerns

Gas bills for an average four-person household in the Netherlands have risen by around €730 compared with January, following a sharp increase in global gas prices, according to data from Dutch media.

The average monthly tariff rose from €218 in January to €279 in August. A fixed-price annual contract now costs about €3,300, compared with €2,600 in January.

Prices have also increased compared with a year ago. In August 2025, an annual contract cost about €2,700, or roughly €590 less than current prices.

The increase comes as the Netherlands faces concerns over gas storage levels ahead of the winter.

Gas infrastructure operator Gasunie said on August 26 that storage operators were not injecting enough gas into underground facilities. 

Without government intervention, it warned, the Netherlands could be unprepared for the heating season if the country experiences a severe winter.
