Nepal faces fresh landslide threat after deadly flood

31 August 2026 14:43

Nepal could face additional landslides in the near future, potentially posing a serious threat to communities in affected areas, China’s Ministry of Water Resources has warned.

China Central Television (CCTV) reported the assessment, citing the ministry’s analysis of satellite imagery. The images indicate that the risk of glacier collapses remains in parts of Nepal, where several landslides of varying sizes could be triggered or intensified by water flows.

The warning follows a powerful flood in northern Nepal on August 26, after an avalanche struck near the Chinese border, around 20 kilometres northeast of the Rasuwagadhi border crossing.

The resulting mass of rock and debris swept rapidly along a river channel for more than 70 kilometres, destroying nearby settlements and flooding large areas.

Authorities and emergency services remain concerned about the possibility of further geological instability as water continues to affect already weakened slopes.

According to the latest figures cited in the report, at least 919 people have died and around 2,000 remain missing following the disaster.
