Majority of Moldovans oppose unification with Romania, poll finds
A new nationwide poll reveals that a significant majority of Moldovan citizens are opposed to the idea of unification with neighboring Romania, although a considerable minority remains in favor of the proposal.
The findings, based on research conducted by the iData polling organization, provide insight into public opinion on key geopolitical and integration issues facing the country, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
According to the survey, 61.5% of respondents expressed opposition to the potential unification of Moldova with Romania, while 31% voiced support for such a move. The data underscores persistent divisions within Moldovan society regarding national identity and the country's long-term trajectory.
The poll also explored attitudes toward broader international alignments. Support for Moldova's accession to the European Union remains relatively strong, with 57.1% of respondents in favor and 36.2% opposed. However, sentiments regarding NATO membership appear more cautious. Approximately 60% of those surveyed rejected the idea of joining the alliance, whereas 30.8% expressed support for NATO accession.
The iData survey was conducted between August 7 and 16, 2025, using the Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) method. The study involved a nationally representative sample of 1,071 respondents, drawn from 89 localities across Moldova. The poll carries a margin of error of ±2.9%.
