PM: Romania offers NATO bases to support lasting peace in Ukraine

22 August 2025 12:38

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has stated that Romania’s contribution to supporting lasting peace in Ukraine could involve making its military bases available to NATO allies.

Speaking about the Government’s position on European leaders urging the United States to deploy F-35 fighter jets to Romania as part of security guarantees for Ukraine, Bolojan emphasised that Romania has made clear it will not send troops to Ukrainian territory, Caliber.Az reports via Romanian media.

"Over these past months, as you know, when the question of supporting security guarantees to achieve lasting peace in Ukraine arose, Romania stated two things very clearly: ‘We will not send troops, and we will not engage in any deployment on Ukrainian soil.’ That was an unambiguous position," the Prime Minister said.

He added that the second key point in discussions with allies has been that Romania, as a NATO member, could make its military bases—which are currently operated jointly with NATO forces, primarily air units—available to NATO and U.S. troops, as well as other allies. Bolojan highlighted that air patrols and air policing missions are already conducted from Romanian airports to monitor activity in the Black Sea, alongside joint military exercises.

“This could be Romania’s way of providing support for lasting peace in Ukraine: making our military bases accessible to NATO allies,” he said.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of National Defence confirmed that Romania is aware of, and will participate in, all allied decisions regarding security guarantees for Ukraine. The ministry stressed that “Romania’s air military infrastructure represents a key asset on NATO’s eastern flank for deterrence and defence.”

The MApN statement came after the British newspaper The Times reported that European countries are pressing U.S. President Donald Trump to station advanced F-35 fighter jets in Romania as part of the security guarantee package for Ukraine. While Trump has ruled out deploying ground troops, he indicated that air support remains an option.
